What event are you running with Team for Kids?
2015 will be an amazing year for many reasons. What I am most excited about is participating in the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon on March 15, 2015 and the TCS NYC Marathon on November 1, 2015.
What is your favorite place to run and why?
I love running in my community. I live in the Bedford Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn. My neighborhood has a pulse to say the least. When I run, I feel like I become an extension of it. I am one with the people, with the landscape and literally the streets themselves. It’s such an amazing feeling. I often refer to running as my active meditation. It allows me to clear my thought and be completely free and limitless.
If you run with music, what are your favorite artists or songs to listen to?
I’m pretty eclectic so it really depends on my mood. Sometimes it’s old school r&b or hip-hop. Other times, I may listen to jazz or pop songs from the 80’s i.e. Madonna’s Luck Star or Prince’s Raspberry Beret.
What is your favorite post-run meal?
I usually run pretty late in the evening so I try to keep it light. I will normally have a protein smoothie or Greek yogurt and fruit.
When did your relationship with running begin and why?
I can literally say running keeps me sane. It gives me hope. It keeps me inspired and provides me with a productive outlet to release the stress and strain from my day. I started running more frequently and for longer periods, this past spring. After experiencing my first runner’s high, I was hooked.
Do you have any pre-race rituals or superstitions, if so, please explain?
No, I’m too excited to be superstitious and still a newbie, so no current rituals either.
Why did you choose to run this event?
As a single mother and woman of color, I have a unique story. It is not that of a typical athlete but instead someone that is relatable to most women. I am an administrator by day and a full-time mom, yet I make time to run and cross train 5-6 days a week. I hope to inspire other women who face similar challenges. Running has opened a whole new world for me and I am so grateful and humbled by this.
Tell us a little more about yourself
I look forward to each of my runs. They all provide an opportunity for me to continue to grow and push past self-imposed limitations. Running is my therapy when facing challenging experiences. It is also what I look forward to the most on my great days. It has given my life much needed balance.
What excites you most about running your event with Team for Kids?
I’m thrilled because both will provide me an opportunity to raise money for a really great cause, as well as run with a purpose. Each race will be a major milestone in my life and I will document the process and my journey to share with others. I want my story to encourage single moms across the country.
