What event are you running with Team for Kids?
The 2015 TCS NYC Marathon on November 1st!
What is your favorite place to run and why?
My favorite place to run is my home town of St.Kilda which is part of the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne Australia. The beach side coastal views are great for taking my mind away from whatever pain and stress my legs and lungs are feeling. Plus there’s always a plethora of people walking dogs along the running tracks so that’s fun in breaking up the monotony of running solo!
If you run with music, what are your favorite artists or songs to listen to?
A bit of a mixed bag, I love some Foo Fighters, U2, Robbie Williams, even a little Tay-Tay (Taylor Swift…am I allowed to admit that?!) But my playlist is a bit of a mixed back and it generally depends on mood. I just have to remind myself that even though I can’t hear myself signing along while I’ve got my headphones in, others can…which would explain the strange looks I get sometimes!!
What is your favorite post-run meal?
Anything pasta! Spaghetti bolognese, fettuccine carbonara, lasagna, chicken pasta bake…I’m pretty easy to please!
When did your relationship with running begin and why?
I’ve always played sport in which running has played a big part, but in just pure running terms, really only since the start of this year as I set my sights on ticking of a bucket list item before my hair got any grayer and my stomach grew any bigger!
Do you have any pre-race rituals or superstitions, if so, please explain?
Just to set my alarm not once, twice but at the very least three times. It’s not that I’m a deep sleeper, i’m just a bit of a panic merchant with things like that! Most likely Ill be setting it 6 times on the morning of November 1st!
Why did you choose to run this event?
Well, I just thought if this is the only marathon I run (and that’s a big if, as I’ve been told I’ll catch the marathon bug and want to do another one after this) then why not make it one of the most iconic in the world. Oh, and we, my wife Aimee and I, just so happened to have already planned to be in the city for our honeymoon so although it’s an odd activity for that kind of celebration i thought it was a sign the marathon planets were aligning for me!
Tell us a little more about yourself
Well I’m a sports fanatic. I work on a 24/7 sports radio station (the only of its kind in Australia) and also commentate on Australian Rules Football (that weird game where we don’t wear pads and kick/throw/and catch!) and soccer. I’ve played just about every other sport I could, from tennis, golf, cricket and basketball.
I’m a CASUAL Clippers fan, haven’t got an NFL team yet, but am open to suggestions! I’ve been to 2 FIFA World Cups including the greatest 3 weeks of my life in Brazil last year!
I was married to my partner of 7 years in the beautiful Aimee in January. I come from a big family which has a large Welsh heritage. I’m the proud father to a 10 month old pugalier puppy/terror…oh, and I’ve never ever been to New York, or America for that matter. So it’s going to be a big trip when we fly out on October 15 to see San Fran, L.A, Vegas, NYC, New Orleans and Memphis!
What excites you most about running your event with Team for Kids?
Just that all the work, preparation and effort will not only help me get to my goal of finishing the race, but that in turn through the funds raised will help kids get the opportunity to also one day run their own marathon and tick off their bucket list items!
In the social media interactions I’ve had, and being so far away from everyone back here in Australia…I’ve been overwhelmed with the real family feel to the group, and can’t wait to meet some of my TFK brothers and sisters in November, both pre-race and for a beer or three afterwards!
