Hear about Rita’s experience running the NYRR Five-Borough Series: Queens 10K with Team for Kids:

“Running with Team for Kids added more value to what we love to do most – run! My brothers (Daniel and Anthony) and I, along with our family friend, Tim, run many New York Road Runners races together. Running with TFK was especially meaningful because of the impact we were able to be a part of, in raising funds for the NYRR youth programs. Not to mention, the TFK community is beyond AWESOME! They are as inspiring as the cause itself; from day one, we felt the support and camaraderie. We believe in the TFK cause and will continue to support the youth programs! Go Mighty Milers and Young Runners!” – Rita Omokha

The Start
The start area is located on Monroe Drive between Michigan Ave and Lake Shore Drive. You can access the full course map here. There are two waves in this marathon. Wave one starts at 7:30am, wave 2 at 8:00am. Your wave assignment is available online if you log into the Athlete Center. For full details on start corrals, please click here. If you are checking a bag, please plan to arrive with plenty of time to drop of your bag and enter your corral. For information about aid stations, mile markers, prohibited items, and further details, please click here. As a reminder, Chicago is in the Central Time zone. Be sure your watch and devices are set to the appropriate local time so you do not have to worry about running late (or early, depending on where you’re coming from)!

The Finish
The race finishes in the same area where it began. For reference, take a look at the course map here. If you are meeting friends or family at the finish, be sure to plan on an exact location with them before race day. We recommend choosing a local restaurant or public transit stop.

Download the Bank of America Chicago Marathon Mobile Application, Powered by TCS
This free app is a great resource for both runners and spectators. The 2016 mobile application features the official Nike+ Run Club training program, live race day runner tracking, schedule of events, real time weather, an interactive course map, event photos and much more!

Knowing what to expect now will help you be prepared when you arrive in Chicago. Plan when you will visit the expo, and if you are arriving in Chicago early enough, you can try to run by the start area so you are aware of the layout and travel logistics from your hotel before race morning.

If you have not received your card by September 15th, please reach out to us at teamforkids@nyrr.org (please also have a look at your junk mail!). The start card is your permission to pick up your race number, so it is very important that you print the document and bring it with you.

Expo BERLIN VITAL
You need to visit the expo to pick up your bib, your ChampionChip, and your athlete wristband. The expo will be held from from September 22nd to September 24th at:

Important notes from the BMW Berlin Marathon site regarding packet pick-up:

  • Presentation of a photo-id (ID-card, passport, drivers license) is mandatory!
  • Presentation of the start card is mandatory
  • Your participation documents have to be picked up personally
  • Pick-up by any other person is not possible
  • The athlete’s wristband is your access authorization to the starting area. The wristband will be attached at the race number pick-up. Please do not remove it before leaving the finishing area on the day of your race.
  • If you have your own ChampionChip, please bring it along and present it for the registration at the counter.
  • If you have booked a rental chip, you will receive it together with your starting number.
  • Every participant will receive a clothes bag.
  • T-Shirts: the pre-booked official adidas event shirts or adidas finisher shirts have to be picked up at the Expo BERLIN-VITAL. A later pick-up is not possible.
  • Any race number not picked up by the end of the expo will expire invariably.

The Start
The start area is located at Straße des 17. Juni, between Brandenburg Gate and “Kleiner Stern.” The changing tent and toilets with wheelchair access are located between the start and the Siegessäule (Victory Column) in the direction of the race. To explore the start area and course on an interactive map, please click here. The official runner start is at 9:15am. If you are checking a bag, please plan to arrive by 7:00am. The race finishes in the same area where it began. For reference, take a look at the course map here. If you are meeting friends or family at the finish, be sure to plan on an exact location with them before race day. We recommend choosing a local restaurant or public transit stop. Also note that at the finish your ChampionChip rental will need to be returned. There are six different locations within the finish area where you can return your chip until 4:30pm. Not returning the chip before 4:30pm will trigger the purchase option. EUR 25,00 (difference between the already payed rental fee and purchase price) will automatically be billed to your provided method of payment.

Knowing what to expect now will help you be prepared when you arrive in Berlin. Plan when you will visit the expo, and if you are arriving in Berlin early enough, you can try to run by the start area so you are aware of the layout and travel logistics from your hotel before race morning.

BMW Berlin Marathon Prep Tip: Start Making Your To-Do List

Travel and Lodging
If you haven’t made your travel arrangements, book them as soon as possible. Use the Berlin Marathon website and click the “Plan Your Race” tab in the top left, then click “Travel and Hotels.” If you have made all your travel and hotel reservations, confirm them now.

Packing
Start making a list of the things you will need to pack, such as specialized food products you may not be able to purchase overseas. Make a pile of potential throw-away clothes for the start of the race. The average temperature in Berlin towards the end of September is between 55°F-66°F , but don’t forget to check the weather forecast closer to race day to be sure you pack to be comfortable!

Shoes
If you need to replace your running shoes, make sure you do so ASAP! (Read coach’s tip last week on running shoes). Wear your shoes on the plane or stow them in your carry-on. You don’t want to risk losing your shoes in lost luggage.

Sightseeing in Berlin
Berlin has many historical sites to see, but save them for after the marathon. Factor jet lag into your plans and make sure you are well rested for your race. Maybe you can even celebrate at Oktoberfest after your race, in full swing up until October 3rd in Munich, a short train ride from Berlin!
