#ReasonsToRun: It Feels Good!

8G0A9969

Running is a natural defense against the stress we encounter in our daily lives. As most of us runners already know, going for a run is a wonderful way to work off daily frustrations. The “runner’s high” produces a calming effect that seems to reduce stress and anxiety, and the euphoria it produces can have a positive effect that lasts all day.  When you run, you leave all the negativity  – the difficult boss, the recent breakup, the bad date, the too big birthday!  –  behind and it’s just you and the open road. For a few minutes of the day, you feel free.  You don’t have to answer that text or voice mail.  As adult runners, we get this. But how great that kids in our youth programs, some who live in very difficult situations, also feel the power of running and get that positive charge in their day as well.

Running doesn’t fix everything, but it’s a good place to start. And running with Team for Kids will help get you and our kids feel the power, the rush, the high, and the beauty of running.  Now go out for a run and sign up to run with Team for Kids in 2016! We are currently open for the United Airlines NYC Half, the BMW Berlin Marathon, and the TCS New York City Marathon. If you are interested in running both the United Airlines NYC Half and the TCS New York City Marathon, then sign up for our Big Apple Challenge!

#ReasonsToRun: The “I Get It!” Moment

One of the sweetest moments in running is when you feel for the first time that sense of accomplishment and pure enjoyment after completing a run, when you smile to yourself and say, “I get it!” It’s moments like this that you want to share with your TFK teammates and coaches because we also “get it.” And to take this one step further, what’s more rewarding than experiencing your own moment than knowing that the kids you are fundraising for are also having their “I get it!” moment, and at a younger age that will hopefully translate into a lifetime of loving to run. And that is a gift you can feel proud of giving.

#ReasonsToRun: To Run Out of Excuses

Have you ever said any of the following: I’m too tired to run this morning. It’s too hot, I’ll wait till later. Wait, I just have to answer this email. I think I feel a cold coming on so I better not run. I don’t have time to run. My socks don’t feel right. I’m still sore from yesterday’s run. The list goes on. You can add some of your own I’m sure. But we run anyway because deep down inside we know that once we run out of excuses and make it through mile one, the stress, the burdens, the excuses all vanish and are replaced with a feeling of freedom. And running with TFK brings a sense of community, camaraderie, and encouragement! Running brings us back to a purity and simplicity that is sometimes missing in our lives and no excuse is worth missing out on that.

#ReasonsToRun: To Catch Up With Friends

We all lead busy lives and sometimes find it difficult to put aside time to be with friends. Running is a great way to incorporate a leisurely workout while catching up with your friends. If you are a runner, chances are some of your best friends are runners as well. Running with friends is not only a great way to socialize, it sure makes the miles fly by.

So instead of trying to schedule a time for coffee or after work drinks, go for a run and catch up during your next five-miler. If you really have some juicy news, make that a 10-miler!

#ReasonsToRun

What it takes to become a runner: a pair of shoes, shorts, a tee shirt, and the desire to get out and run. We come in all shapes and sizes, levels of ability and disability. We like to race, or not. Running is the great equalizer of sports. You can do it alone or with a group. Our reasons for running vary, but the common denominator is the peace it brings to our souls. Show me a runner and I’ll show you someone who is in tune with nature and themselves.

#ReasonsToRun

The best reason for getting out and going for a run is because you can. Running is cheap compared to other sports (you only need a good pair of running shoes), it doesn’t take a lot of thought or preparation, and it doesn’t require a lot of time – any distance counts as a run! It’s the gateway sport to all other activities and something that New York Road Runners promotes as a lifelong activity. Taking that first step can be the hardest, but once you get in the groove, the endorphins kick in and you relax. You can feel the stresses of daily life slip away and be replaced by an exhilarating calmness that you won’t want to end. So what’s stopping you? Go for a run!

#ReasonsToRun: Inspire a Success Story

It finally feels like spring and with that comes a rebirth, a sense that anything is possible, especially after our harsh northeast winter. This is the time to set your spring and summer running goals, whether that’s training for a PR or your first race. Our Young Runners have been training inside throughout the winter and are also looking forward to the warm weather spring will bring and the outdoor running opportunities.

Kids like Abdel are especially looking forward to spring running opportunities. In sixth grade, Abdel was the class clown. His GPA suffered and he had to attend summer school. In seventh grade, Abdel joined his Young Runners team, studied hard, and was rewarded with a high honors “A” grade average. “Abdel is the true definition of a student-athlete with a success story,” says his coach. Now in ninth grade, Abdel, 14, completed the January NYRR Fred Lebow Manhattan Half in 1:41 by training outside in December, and has improved his mile time to 5:43 from 8:18. “He embodies the essence of what we want all Young Runners to be like,” says Kotung.
